Tired of a runny nose? Reach for home remedies
It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

Rhinitis can make life miserable, especially in autumn and winter. It usually appears in the least expected moment, so it is worth knowing home remedies to eliminate it. Check what you can do to enjoy trouble-free breathing

Where does catarrh come from?

In the nose there is a mucous membrane, which not only moistens the air inhaled by us, but also constitutes a protective barrier against viruses, bacteria and various types of pollution. When we are ill, the immune system stops working properly, and thus our body is more susceptible to attack. Then, an infection occurs, which the body tries to fight by excessive production of mucus, i.e. by means of catarrh.

Of course, rhinitis also occurs due to allergies and more serious diseases, such as sinusitis, but in this article we focus on the viral variant, characteristic of the cold. So how to cope with a runny nose using home remedies?

Inhalation of essential oils

Aromatherapy has long been a great way to relieve a runny nose. This is because it opens up the airways, brings relief and weakens bacteria and viruses. For this purpose, intensive essential oils of bactericidal nature are used, namely eucalyptus, peppermint or pine.

Performing home inhalation is very simple. Just pour a few drops of oil into a bowl of boiling water, lean over the pot, cover your head with a towel and breathe deeply for about 10 minutes.

Nasal irrigation

This is a method that guarantees immediate results. It consists in flushing out from the nose and sinuses the secretions stuck there, which make breathing difficult, as well as all kinds of allergens or viruses that weaken the body

Fortunately, everyone can cope with home irrigation. All you need is 0.9% saline (available at any pharmacy) and a nasal aspirator, a medical syringe or a container with a funnel-shaped outlet. Then tilt your head and pour the fluid into the left nostril so that it comes out the right nostril and repeat the process in the other direction. In the meantime, you should breathe through your mouth. Then blow your nose well.

Herbs and spices

You may not realize that the vast number of spices, herbs or cooking ingredients you use on a daily basis can help you fight a runny nose. How

  • Chili peppers are great at removing excess secretions due to their capsaicin content, so introduce them into your diet.
  • Inhaling the scent of grated horseradish root also loosens mucus, so do this at least once a day if you can.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mucous membranes hydrated.
  • Add a lot of honey to your tea, which inhibits the development of the disease, as well as lemon.
  • In meals, do not forget about ginger and garlic – thanks to them you can restore the patency of the nasal passages

At the same time, keep in mind that sometimes home remedies for fighting runny nose may not be enough. If you notice blood on the tissue or your discharge is thick and green, go to the doctor, who will perform a thorough examination.
